Illovo Sugar Malawi has donated medical equipment worth over K9 million to Kameza Quarantine and Isolation Centre in Blantyre, to support the facility’s capacity in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic.
Illovo Sugar Malawi Managing Director, Lekani Katandula, presented the donation to the Health Office’s Director of Health and Social Services, Dr Gift Kawalazira, who remarked that the donation boosted the facility’s ability to combat the spread of the disease and treating patients. “This donation means that we now have capacity to treat critically ill Covid-19 patients at this facility however we still need more to expand the Centre,” Kawalazira said.
The equipment includes eight hydraulic adjustable hospital beds, mattresses, a vital signs monitor and an electrocardiography (ECG) machine. On the other hand, Katandula attributed the donation to the firm’s efforts in helping the government combat the pandemic in Malawi. “This is not something that the government can deal with on its own but in collaboration with the private sector and even the community, if we can all cooperate we can avoid the pandemic and get it under control as quickly as possible,” he said.
