The Indian High Commission to Malawi has warned Indian nationals that are working in the country, to have work permits, as the law requires for foreigners in the country.

“All Indian nationals, who are presently working in Malawi and their dependent family members, are advised to keep their work permits, passports and other related documents updated.” reads part of the statement. The warning follows after the Ministry of Homeland Security and the Department of Immigration made arrests in the last one week, apprehending Indian nationals that were working without permits. During a recent surprise visit to Illovo Sugar Company, the Minister of Homeland Security Richard Chimwendo Banda stressed that no foreigner is allowed to work in this country without work permits. Immigration Prosecutor, Binwell Kachingwe, outlined that failure to provide work permits will result in arrest and deportation.

The Indian High Commission has also called on the Indian nationals to abide by all other work laws and regulations of the government of Malawi.
