The latest figures from the National Statistical Office (NSO) have shown that Malawi’s headline inflation went down by 0.5 percentage points to 7.1% in September.
The rate is the lowest record since December 2017, as the record represents a 23% drop in inflation when compared to 9.2% recorded in September 2019.
Meanwhile, according to a recent report by Oxfam, income and wealth inequality has worsened in the country, as the richest 10% of Malawians spending 34 times more than the poorest 10%.
Rankings on the Country Policy Brief on Commitment to Reducing Inequality (CRI) Index in 2020, shows that out of 158 countries, Malawi ranks 44 on education spending, 126 in Universal Health Coverage, and spends 6.4% on social protection which is low across the Sadc lower-income countries.
