Figures from the National Statistics Office show that inflation dropped to 9.4% in April, attributed to declining food prices.
On the other hand, there has been an influx of maize in most traditional markets, which contributes to the drop in inflation.
Things are not as bright on the commercial market as limited food supply due to covid-19 has pushed up food prices, as figures from the Centre for Social Concern (CfSC) show. Consumers have therefore been paying more for food items, while the cost of living has also been pushed upwards.
CfSC has said in its 2020 Basic Needs Basket Assessment notes that between March and April a family of six needed K211 000 to afford basic needs compared to K180 000 during the same period last year. The basic need costs portray a high cot of living, regardless of maize prices lowering from K17500 in March to K9500 in April.
