Judiciary Members of the Staff Union (Jumsu) have threatened to stop working if they are not provided with Covid-19 special funds.
Speaking to The Nation newspaper, Jumsu spokesperson Andy Haliwa said the request was made to the Treasury last month, prior to the recent Presidential Elections. “We wrote to the Treasury before the elections asking for special funds to protect ourselves during this time because those who are working on shifts need personal protective equipment [PPE].” said Haliwa.
Since Malawi first registered covid-19 cases in April, similar protests have been occurring; Health workers and prison warders were seen on nationwide strikes, demanding protective gear, allowances and more to ease their lives amidst the coronavirus pandemic. Last month, Staff from the Department of Civil Aviation across the country threatened industrial action over lack of personal protective equipment and risk allowances in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic.
