Kenya is moving towards a law that will see the banning of second-hand vehicle imports in the country. The law states that vehicles that will be allowed into the country will not be more than 5 years old.
Prior to the law, vehicles had a usage limit of 8 years. Therefore, the new law, if passed, will disqualify all second hand cars made before 2015, which has citizens worried that this will lead to a demand for newer cars, which will make manufacturers and importers raise prices.
Cabinet Secretary of Kenya’s Ministry of Trade, Peter Munya, said the resolve is due to consideration for the environment and to promote the local automotive industry.
