During a business breakfast that the Employers Consultative Association of Malawi (Ecam) hosted, the International Labor Organisation (ILO) revealed that it is amidst efforts of enforcing provisions of the Workers Compensation Act in Malawi.
ILO Social Protection Technical Officer, Andre Felipe Bongestabs noted the lack of understanding on implementation on standards of working conditions between employers and employees in most institutions. He announced that the Workers Compensation Act is to be reviewed by ILO, for the betterment of workers. “This also protects the employers because under the new regulations an insurance company pays the claims unlike in the past when it was taken care of by the company itself” Bongestabs said.
Concurring with Bongestabs, Ecam president, George Matipwiri, said the association is working with the government to intensify efforts of safeguarding the welfare of employees. ILO is also working on bridging of the knowledge gap on working conditions between employers and workers to safeguard the welfare of the workers.
