The International Labour Organisation (ILO) has spoken on high unemployment levels in the country, advising stakeholders in the labour industry to unite in combating high levels of unemployment.
ILO Senior Specialist for Employers Activities, Maria Machailo-Ellis, noted that there is a mismatch between what the industry wants and the capabilities that university graduates have. This was addressed at a two-day conference organised by the Employers Consultative Association of Malawi (Ecam), where stakeholders from East, Central and Southern Africa who held discussions themed ‘The Future of Work; Responsive Skills for Decent Work and Sustainable Development’.
Lameck Jaston, a representative of the International Organisation for Employers, added that the population of any country is comprised of more youth, therefore that demographic should be included in such discussions to come up with labour solutions that accommodate them.
