Following the struggles that the legumes sector is facing, a meeting will be held to provide a platform for stakeholders to discuss and find solutions.
The meeting will be hosted by the African Institute for Corporate Citizenship (AICC), to be held on Thursday at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe.
According to a concept note that was released before the meeting, AICC outlines that some of the key issues for discussion will be weak credit and input markets for farmers, poor infrastructure systems and limited participation of women and the youth in legume production, among others.
On the other hand, the Legumes Development Trust (LDT) has called for more investments in the legume sector to improve livelihoods of smallholder farmers. “The legumes industry is in its infant stage, as much as we appreciate the initiative and recognition by government, we say K1.8 billion is not enough.” said LDT chairperson responsible for value chain and markets Vincent Mpaluko.
