Part of Area 32 in Lilongwe is designated for a new city centre, says a Press Release by the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development. The project will provide the country with an opportunity to plan and implement physical developments which are in line with the new urban agenda.
The new urban agenda is a 5 point development program discussed and adopted by UN Member states, during the Third Conference on Housing and Human settlement (Habitat III) that happened in Quito Ecuador, 2016. “The National Land policy and Physical Planning Act, with its subsidiary legislation, provide for the use and development of land in a coordinated manner and all councils have put in place laws that articulate this vision” says the press release.
Dr Janet Banda, secretary of the ministry, outlined the use of specific plots in the area, announcing that there are plans to build a shopping mall, high rise public car park, banking complex, amusement park, casinos and more.
