The tobacco market at Limbe Auction Floors has been halted as the growers and buyers were amidst unceasing disagreements over prices and increased rejection rate.
Decrying low rates, tobacco growers have raised their complaints to Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development Joseph Mwanamvekha. It is reported that the floors were offering a minimum price of $0.80 (about MK582), which according to the farmers, is too low. Following the failure to come to a mutual agreement, Limbe Auction Floors has been suspended indefinitely.
The news follows opening of Chinkhoma Auction Floors in Kasungu District, where farmers shared the same grievances; The lowest price recorded on the auction market was $0.90 per kilogramme (kg) while the highest price was pegged at $1.50 per kg. Tobacco Association of Malawi Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Felix Thole, was equally not impressed with prices offered at the beginning of the market.
