Lilongwe Auction Floors has been suspended following protest against high rejection rate and delays by some tobacco buyers to enter the market, as confirmed by AHL Group public relations manager Teresa Ndanga.
“I can confirm that the Lilongwe market has been suspended following farmer grievances against buyers’ high rejection rate. Since they have written the Tobacco Commission as a regulator of the industry, the market will remain suspended until we receive a directive on the way forward.” confirmed Ndanga.
The tobacco market has registered a 95% rejection rate. As of Friday last year, the country has posted $15.1 million from the sale of 8.9 million kilograms (kg) of all types of tobacco within the first two weeks of sales. On the other hand, , the Tobacco Commission has called for the review of the law which was implemented not more than a year ago.
