During a three-day workshop for internal auditors, the Institute of Internal Auditors Malawi (IIAM) pledged to improve internal audit functions to meet international standards.
The workshop was aimed at training local internal auditors in quality assessment reviews. The training, carried out by South Africa-based private practice internal auditor Martin Grobbler, was crucial, as IIAM president Ackson Banda said Malawi has been relying on foreigners to do these assessments, hence companies lose out on profits as they spend a lot to bring these people in the country. Banda added that the trainees will train their colleagues in internal audit functions in various organisations to advise on how to comply with best practices to ensure best results.
On the other hand, Grobbler outlined that internal auditors have the potential to make significant impact in terms of the way organisations achieve objects, pervasive risks, identify opportunities and manage risks. During the time when the workshop was being announced, IIA-Malawi former director Lisa Mchinjiri said there will be more similar workshops to strengthen the capacity of internal auditors and support their work in organizations.
