MACADAMIA NUTS FARMERS GIVEN K3bn BOOST – Malawi Live
The International Finance Corporation (IFC) has committed a $4 million (about K3 billion) boost for macadamia farmers. IFC is the World Bank’s private sector financing arm, aiming to help expand macadamia nuts processing operations in Malawi.
The boost is going towards the Global Tea and Commodities Limited, listed as one of Malawi’s top macadamia producers. Having launched its smallholder macadamia program in 2016, Malawi ranks as the world’s seventh largest producer of the macadamia nuts.
Global Tea and Commodities Limited chairperson Nadeem Ahmed said last week in Blantyre that Malawi has been failing to meet the demand for the crop, which takes 10 years for the macadamia tree to start producing for the market. He said due to the limited supply on the global market, macadamia nuts prices can fetch as much as $15 000 (about K11 million) per tonne while groundnuts prices range from $250 (about K185 000) to $300 (K222 000) per tonne.
To purchase some tasty macadamia roasted nuts, customers are urged to try Comforzi Plantations Limited. Their products are accessible in all Glenae retail outlets across Malawi.
