The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) has announced of postcodes, of which areas will be identified by. According to an ad placed in the newspapers, the postcodes were effective on 10th May this year.
According to Macra, the postcodes have been developed under the National Addressing System that it is implementing with other government bodies. Explaining the development, the ad defines a postcode as a unique identifier for an area, composed of letters or digits and Malawi has adopted, a numeric postcode system with six digits that are representing a region, district and delivery areas.
Macra has hailed the development as means of easing connection of individuals to Local and Central Government, as well as effective response to emergency situations by fire, police, and ambulance services. Provision of verifiable proof of residence. The development will also increase revenues to Government through tax collection, as well as increase accuracy in collection of census information. Deliveries will also be made easier as locations will be easy to spot.
The postcode will have six characters, with numbers and/or letters. The first character will represent region, the next 2 characters will represent District/City, while the last 3 characters will represent location or Traditional Authority.
