MACRA SLAPS AIRTEL WITH K820m FINE – Macra News Malawi
The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) has fined mobile service provider Airtel Malawi K820 million for failing to comply with the Communications Act, which partly states that 20% of its shareholding should be local.
MACRA director general Godfrey Itaye is briefed journalists at Macra head office in Blantyre, stating that the fine was adjusted from K500 million, but after failure to comply to the Act, Airtel was fined per fortnight K20 million which has accumulated to the current K820 million.
In June this year, Macra has reduced its rates at which telecommunication companies are charged. Following suit, the telecommunication companies also slashed their tariffs for various services and products. The development lead to notable downward reviews from TNM, MTL, Access and Airtel. Depending on what services and products are offered by a respect company, the tariffs have been lowered on voice or/and internet tariffs.
