Malawi is the lowest ranking in electricity uptake, according to a report by Agence francaise de developpement, in partnership with the World Bank. Figures show that Malawi is at the bottom at 35% followed by Uganda at 45%, Niger, Liberia and Sierra Leone at 46%, 47% and 58% respectively.
Soaring to the top is South Africa at 98%, followed by Nigeria, Gabo Verde and Gabon, at 96%, 95% and 93%, respectively. However, the report has acknowledged that Malawi and Rwanda have shown significant gains.
Malawi has recently announced that 140 megawatts (MW) will be add to the national power grid, as indicated by documents that the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) has signed, under the Energy Generation Company (Egenco).
Meanwhile, the $127 million (about K94 billion) power interconnection project with Mozambique materialises by 2022, allowing Malawi to tap 200 megawatts (MW) of power from the Southern Africa Power Pool (Sapp).
