Global Finance Magazine has ranked Malawi as the 4th poorest country in the world. The report concurs with other prior studies as in January 2018, a columnist noted that Malawi was then the poorest country in the world, noting the lowest GDP per capita measure.
The Global Finance Magazine notes that Malawi has made financial strides. The report reads, “One of Africa’s smallest nations, in recent years Malawi has made strides in improving economic growth and implementing crucial structural reforms.”
The report also says that the common factor to poverty, in the listed 10 countries, is civil and ongoing sectarian or ethnic conflicts.
Last year in November, Finance Minister Goodall Gondwe expressed concerns over Malawi still being regarded as one of 47 least developed countries (LDCs) by the United Nations. “It pains me that each time I see a report from outside the country, Malawi is the poorest country in Africa” said Gondwe, “We are determined that this should stop”.
