The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has reported of seizing 3,500 trays of eggs which were being smuggled into the country from Zambia.
According to MRA Marketing and Communications Manager, Wilma Chalulu, a truck containing the eggs was intercepted at MRA’s Lirangwe check-point in Blantyre two weeks ago. The development follows another operation, not so long ago, when MRA seized 213 bales of second hand clothes.
In February, Malawi Revenue Authority released a statement, warning smugglers of intensified border patrols and inspections. Various businesses have suffered due to the influx of smuggling, reported in the borders. On the other hand, (MRA) planned in a series of meetings with chiefs in Mangochi, aimed at sensitisation on the importance of paying taxes and dangers of smuggling of goods. Mangochi, which contributes about K116 million in customs and domestic tax to the tax buffer every month, has all along been regarded as a tax haven as most vehicle owners do not pay duty and most of the goods are smuggled, resulting in their prices being lower than the actual market value.
