The $127 million (about K94 billion) power interconnection project with Mozambique has been signed on and will be complete by 2022, allowing Malawi to tap 200 megawatts (MW) of power from the Southern Africa Power Pool (Sapp).
Minister of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining Aggrey Masi signed 5 agreements between Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) and Electricidade De Mocambique (E. P. EDM).
The project agreements include implementation, wheeling and power purchase,system operating, maintenance, which will be renewed every five years. The stated agreements were also signed by Mozambique Minister of Mineral Resources, Ernesto Tonela.
Minister Masi announced that upon completion of the project, Malawi will tap 50MW from Mozambique and another 150MW from South Africa totaling up to 200MW.
