An agricultural firm known as Synthesis Agriculture,  has called farmers to produce watermelons of the desired quantity and quality to penetrate the export market. The firm’s operations manager Aaron Chitimbe informed farmers at a watermelon production training in Lilongwe on Monday that supermarkets locally and internationally want high-value products.

He outlined that farmers can make up to K15 million per hectare by implementing watermelon production, as Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique are demanding the commodity, with other European countries.

K15 million per hectare by implementing best practices in production, adding that neighbouring Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique as well as some European countries are also demanding watermelons. The announcement follows similar resounding calls for agricultural diversification as the International Food Policy Research Institute (Ifpri) advised Malawi to diversify her agricultural output.
