Following a series of meetings that Vice President Saulos Chilima recently conducted with the parastatals, he has condemned the Malawi Post Corporation (MPC) and Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) for poor business performance that has resulted in the parastatals owing billions of Kwacha to service providers.
MBC has up to K4.9 billion in tax arrears and K1.2 billion in pension arrears of which it was seeking a bailout from the government, while MPC owes debts amounting to K1.6 billion in utility bills and statutory obligations as well as K6.3 billion in taxes, Macra levy and licences. Chilima outlined that his ministry wll not provide bailout for the parastatals, as he felt that both MBC and MPC have the potential and capacity to sort out the arrears.
On the other hand, the Minister of Information, Gospel Kazako, along with the VP, called out the Malawi Communication Regulatory Authority (Macra) for abuse of finances and being a political regulator instead of a communications regulator.
