Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) on Thursday did a double take: It paid K26 million as the last chunk of its K164million debt in royalties to Musician Union of Malawi (Mum) and also also paid in advance K25 million for the rest of the year.
MBC Director General Aubrey Sumbuleta outlined that the sum counts for arrears dating back to 2011. “We are closing a chapter that has not portrayed a very good picture of MBC and musicians in the country, and we are beginning a very new chapter. And paying in advance for the year 2019-2020” he said.
During the handover ceremony, it was announced that the public broadcaster will be engaging the musicians in a number of projects to be announced in few months coming. On the other hand, MBC Board Chairperson Reverend Daniel Gunya described the payment as a gesture and encouragement for the musicians to do more.
