McDonald’s announced it will be widely rolling out its own plant-based burger, which will be made available for testing in select markets starting in 2021, before potentially expanding to other regions.
Ian Borden, McDonald’s international president, said McPlant is crafted exclusively for McDonald’s, by McDonald’s. “In the future, McPlant could extend across a line of plant-based products including burgers, chicken-substitutes and breakfast sandwiches.” said Borden.
The company trialed a plant-based burger using Beyond Meat patties last year in Canada. As one of the world’s largest buyers of beef—the most climate-damaging food on the planet—McDonald’s is working to reduce emissions by supporting regenerative agriculture. But it’s also launching a new “McPlant” plant-based burger, something that could also make a difference if it can scale up.
