The Malawi Electoral Commission released results for 23rd May, being the second day of elections results tabulation. According to the MEC circular, today’s results are being released with no complaints (from of yesterday’s results.
The results are as follows, in surnames alphabetical order, as arranged by the MEC ballot papers.
Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, Malawi Congress Party 1,257,853 votes representing 35.44 percent
Dr Saulos Klaus Chilima, UTM, 651,124 votes representing 18.35 percent
Professor John Eugenes Chisi, Umodzi Party, 14,288 votes representing 0.40 percent
Reverend Hadwick Kaliya, Independent, 11,789 votes
representing 0.33 percent
Peter DSD Kuwani, Mbakuwawaku Movement for Development(MMD), 15,418 votes representing 0.43 percent
Atupele Muluzi, United Democratic Front (UDF), 161,499 votes representing 4.55 percent.
Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) 1,436,877 votes representing 40.49 percent.
The circular by MEC reads “My fellow Malawians, as of now the Commission has received results from 3,792 centres out of the 5,002. This means we have received 75.81 percent of the total polling centres. This is not a percentage of the total registered voters but total number of centres. The total number of ballot casts is 3,601,538. A total of 3,548,848 are valid votes while 52,690 votes are null and void.”
