During the opening of the opening an annual review and planning meeting for agriculture research

programs for the 2019/2020, the Minister of Agriculture Lobin Lowe promised that his ministry will put new regulations in agribusiness that will favour Malawian investors.

Lowe noted the dominance of foreigners in the sector and his ministry will make sure that there is change. “We have put much of our focus on production leaving the marketing side behind; hence, foreigners are taking advantage and exploiting our farmers,” he explained.

Meanwhile, as section 44 of the Public Procurement and Disposal of Assets Authority (PPDA) Act of 2017 states that procurement bids should prioritize 60% indigenous black Malawians and 40% others nationalities. The Asian community feels that the arrangement sidelines them as indigenous Malawians. The community presented their grievances to the Parliamentary Committee on Industry Trade and Tourism, represented by Rafiq Hajat, who outlined that there is segregation in terms of indigenous Malawians and non-indigenous Malawians.
