As promised, India constructed a multi million business incubation centre in Malawi. The project, ran by the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Institute (Smedi), was started in 2016 and was being visited by the Indian High commissioner this year, when he stated that India will commit to receiving more Malawian exports.
High Commissioner Suresh Menon expressed his nation’s interest in Malawian products, saying India is looking forward to seeing them on the supermarket.
The incubation centre was set for government to train SMEs through its arms in equipping them with necessary skills to run their businesses.
Menon acknowledged that the incubation project came about as a way of implementing government’s policies and he urged the project team to take good care of the machinery that has been donated.“We will try hard to find a solution in helping SMEs further after they have acquired training.” he said.
As the project prepares SMEs for exports to India and other markets, it is expected to promote social development, generate jobs, mobilise local resources and increase enterpreneurs skills.
