The Ministry of Agriculture continues to face protests against farmgate prices that were announced last week, as Legumes Development Trust has called for the upward revision of the prices of commodities in their sector.

LDT Programs Coordinator Sangwani Makoko expressed dissatisfaction with the prices, stating that the Ministry of agriculture “could have done better because, for groundnuts, we do not know what determined its price. There has been a rise in the price of unshelled groundnuts while the price for shelled groundnuts remains constant,”. Last week it was announced that shelled groundnuts are pegged at K480 per kg, polished rice at K600 per kg, K320 per kg for soya beans and cotton, K510 per kg for pure beans, paprika at K850 per kg, and chilies at K770 per kg.

On the other hand, the Cotton Farmers Association (Cofa) has rejected the K320 offer, stating that they will not settle for a price lesser than K400 per kg, while the Farmers Union o f Malawi (FUM) has asked government to adjust the minimum maize price from K150 to K200.
