Malawi Investment and Trade Centre (MITC) over 90% of the Malawi’s Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are not registered by the Registrar General.

MITC Director of Investment, Promotion and Facilitation, Joshua Nthakomwa, attributed the circumstance to SMEs fear of  paying the necessary taxes and fees. 

Small and Medium Enterprises Development Institute (Smedi) Director of Business Information and Training, Edward Chilima, added that most SMEs fail to register because of issues to do with finance. A program has therefore been rolled out to tutor SMEs on the benefits of registering.
