Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has launched EFD ‘Lisiti Langa’ promotion in which winners will be identified through Raffle Draw.
Speaking when he officially launched the raffle draw in the presence of the media at Msonkho House in Blantyre on Friday, May 11, 2018, MRA Commissioner-General, Mr. Tom Gray Malata said the promotion is meant to encourage every consumer to demand an EFD receipt whenever they buy taxable items from Value Added Tax (VAT) registered businesses.
He said since, for the past three years which EFDs have been in operation, the machines have assisted to enhance the collection of VAT by 42% from K76 billion in the 2015/16 fiscal to K108 billion.
“I appeal to everyone in the country to always demand their EFD receipts and use each of one them to enter into this promotion. The prizes to be won are many. The biggest prize of all is that by demanding the receipt you will be developing Malawi,” the Commissioner-General said.
He also commended all law-abiding VAT operators who installed the EFD machines and use them all the time
He added that besides revenue enhancement, the EFDs have among other yielded various successes by improving record keeping of taxpayers on sales which has helped verifications of VAT paid.
“EFDs have helped taxpayers to easily handle audit objections by using information from the devices. They have also assisted MRA to get information on non-compliance through massive reports by customers,” he said.
In a presentation, the Head Corporate Affairs Steven Kapoloma said the promotion will run for three months from May 11 to July 27 this year.
“During this period we will be conducting weekly draws. Entry into this raffle draw is through EFD receipts’ serial and receipt numbers using either Airtel or TNM numbers. One just requires to dial *915*5# to initiate the entry process,” he said.
Kapoloma said over 100 prizes will be won weekly which include K50,000 to 6 lucky winners, branded T-Shirts, airtime.
“There will be a Grand draw at the end of the campaign, the first prize is K2 million, second prize K500,000 and a TV Screen, with K200,000 and an upright being the third prize,” he said.
