In an effort to enhance revenue collection, the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has announced of introduction of cargo systems on the borders of the country.
MRA’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Steven Kapoloma, told Nyasa Times that so far three scanners are operational at Mwanza and Songwe border stations while another one is at Lilongwe Inland Examination Centre. “Three scanners are operational at Lilongwe Inland Examination Centre, Songwe and Mwanza borders while works at Dedza site are at an advanced stage,” Kapoloma added.
The innovative development follows another announcement by the authority, that it is collecting over 80% of the taxes through E-Payment. Kapoloma informed the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament that MRA is introducing a number of products and services through its modernization drive. The cargo scanners are one of more innovations that the authority has put in place for efficient revenue collection. Cargo scanners also help to improve security of the country by identifying concealed imports such as drugs and weapons.
