In the Mapeto David Whitehead and Sons (DWS) Limited case of K10.8 billion tax evasion, two Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) custom officers have been implicated.
MRA Lawyers Anthony Chungu and Beatrice Mwangwela did not disclose the identities of the clients but outlined that the two will be added to the list of accused persons. MRA spokesperson Steven Kapoloma said 5 Mapeto officials had been arrested in connection with three cases of tax evasion.
The 5 officials are being accused of smuggling and under-declaring goods as they declared finished raw materials as raw materials to pay less tax. “They have also been under-declaring their sales and Paye (Pay as You Earn). They employed expatriates, paid them normal salaries but declared less to MRA,” said Kapoloma.
