A published notice by the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) says that 300 vehicles that did not pay duty, will be auctioned off.
MRA head of corporate affairs Steve Kapoloma said that owners were given notice to clear the vehicles, but have failed to do so, even after 2 grace periods.
Following assessing the gazetting process will be done within the first quarter of the 2021 financial year covering July to September.
By law, MRA is supposed to sell vehicles that have not been cleared for three months, but due to restrictions in the management of the Covid-19 pandemic, the tax collector gave the importers more time to clear them.
