During a tour at Phombeya power sub-station in Balaka, the Minister of Energy Newton Kambala said the Malawi-Mozambique Power Interconnection Project will be ready by 2023.
Last year, it was assumed that the $127 million (about K94 billion) power interconnection project with Mozambique would materialise by 2022. The minister said the government is at an advanced stage, but we are still pushing for funding to have it completed at the earliest time. Upon completion, the development will allow Malawi to tap 200 megawatts (MW) of power from the Southern Africa Power Pool (Sapp).
The project will interconnect Mozambique and Malawi power systems through the transmission line from Matambo sub-station in Tete Province in Mozambique to Phombeya sub-station in Balaka, Malawi. Meanwhile, the energy ministry is amidst sweeping out corruption at Escom, as the new administration has warned against abuse of funds at the parastatal.
