To improve public service delivery and win back the trust of service users, the Malawi Police Service (MPS) has inducted 12 Professional Standards Unit (PSU) officers.
National Police deputy spokesperson Peter Kalaya announced that 12 officers drawn from police stations across Malawi participated in the training taking place at National Police headquarters in Lilongwe. “At the end of the training, the officers will be deployed to beef-up manpower in the six regional PSU offices found at each regional police headquarters in the country,” he said.
Banda said that Police units and vehicles have been attacked by angry Malawians, mostly because of our poor conduct and unreasonable decisions. “This must remind us of how low we have sunk, in terms of officer discipline,” Banda said.
Last year, Inspector General, George Kainja, announced amends to gain back the public’s trust, after noting that the police have a bad reputation. Making resolutions, the IG met with the Public Affairs Committee (Pac) to discuss how the police can rebuild its public trust. The meeting followed after 18 women were sexually assaulted by law enforcers at Mpingu and M’bwatalika on the outskirts of Lilongwe in October last year.
