While livestock farmers are struggling with constant Foot and Mouth Disease outbreaks, poultry farmers prefer selling their products locally, unaware of an international market that waits for them. The Malawi Consul General in Tete Province, Wilson Moleni, has announced that Mozambique is in dire need of poultry products.
Moleni challenged the current Malawian supply of 10m dozen eggs per annum, stressing that Mozambique demanded a double of that supply.
The Malawi Investment and Trade centre has embarked on an initiative to promote local products and services into foreign markets; the subject of poultry products has been discussed.
Malawi poultry currently relies on its local markets, namely restaurants, hotels and households. The demand from Mozambique will contribute to a diversity of farming, as most livestock farmers mostly depend on sheep, cattle, goats and pigs.
