African Cotton and Textile Industries Federation (Actif) has reported that says Malawi exported $553,000 worth of apparels in 2018, which indicates a 19.8% improvement in comparison to 2017.
Malawi exports apparel to the United States under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa), and has been reaping massive profits since 2016.
Actif is promoting trade and increasing market access for the cotton, textile, and apparel industry in Africa, a development that will benefit the textile plant that is finishing in June this year at Salima. The factory, set up by the China-Malawi Cotton Company, is expected to benefit local farmers by demanding 100,000 metric tons of cotton whilst expected to employ 1500 people.
Upon completion of the project, Malawi is expected to be on an apparel exports boom, therefore bettering the economy.
