Enyezini vocational training centre has been established in Mzimba, aimed at teaching communities in climate smart agriculture technologies.
The initiative has been launched by Honour2Life (H2L), a charity organisation from The Netherlands, trustee in Malawi, Astrid Holtslag said Enyezini was chosen as the area for the school after noticing high unemployment rates among the youth who have completed their secondary school education.
H2L invested about K200 million in the project by setting up an irrigation system at the school with two water tanks and water basins. “The irrigation system will support various farming activities on the site such as bamboo plantation and horticulture,” Holtslag said.
Last year, the Irish Ambassador to Malawi, Gery Cunningham said Malawi needs to triple its investment in climate smart agriculture if it is to achieve meaningful and sustainable economic growth. The Adventist Development Relief Agency (ADRA) Malawi also advised farmers in Mulanje District to practice climate smart agriculture, following the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services forecast that there would be heavy rains in some parts of the district and prolonged dry spells in other parts during this rainy season. ADRA has also been encouraging farmers to undertake climate smart agriculture, following unpredictable weather patterns in Malawi.
