Mbondole Youth Group in Mzimba has committed to protecting their forests from depletion through bee-keeping. The youths are currently practicing apiculture to avoid deforestation.
The group’s representative, Mphatso Nkhambule, said the initiative is bearing fruit. “With five beehives, we have not only managed to secure forests from illegal logging and charcoal making, but we are also generating income,” she said.
The group is part of the Centre for Environmental Policy and Advocacy (Cepa) that was established in the area under their project My Life My Choice, aimed at empowering the youth, especially girls, under an initiative Young Girls Can Do It, to take leading roles in enhancing positive change in society.
