Business owners in Mzuzu protested against (among others) Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) newly introduced carbon tax, on a condition that MRA explains the justification of the tax. A petition addressed to MRA commissioner general Tom Malata, demands for the removal of some personnel from the tax authority, there are sexual harassment allegations towards some officials towards MRA officials who are involved in cross-border trade, especially those going to Tunduma and Kyela in Tanzania.
The demonstrators marched from Katoto Secondary School to MRA offices situated in the central business district where they delivered a petition, which also addressed the high cost of Electronic Fiscal Devices [EFD], according to the protesters. The petition reads, “Your EFDs are often out of service. It is sad because while other countries are developing deliberate policies to empower struggling indigenous entrepreneurs, our government is developing policies that disempower locals and promote foreigners. We find this sickening,”
The Nation newspaper MRA head of corporate affairs Steven Kapoloma who confirmed receiving the petition and added that a response to the petition will be arranged.
