The 10th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, agreed that there is a need for parties to develop a comprehensive resource mobilisation strategy for biodiversity conservation. To implement that, the first Malawian chapter of the Biodiversity Finance (Biofin) initiative has been launched.
Chief Director in the Ministry of Natural Resources, Oliver Kumbambe outlined that the initiative is aimed at enhancing conservation, sustainable use of fauna and flora. The initiative is being implemented with the Ministry of Finance and managed through the United Nations Development Program [UNDP].
UNDP deputy resident representative, Claire Medina said that the initiative will address issues of biodiversity loss, as Malawi is currently its biodiversity through deforestation, raging fires that wipe ecosystems, soil loss and the threats of invasive alien species.
Last year in December, President Peter Mutharika launched the 2019/20 National Forestry Season. The government worked on environmental conservation by planting trees and managing forests as one way to fight impacts of Climate Change.
