The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (Mera) will delay the issuance of licenses for fuel stations that have been recently built, to check licences to ensure compliance with the required regulations, as the Minister of Energy, Newton Kambala outlined that the filling stations are not in line with Mera regulations.
“We have seen a lot of filling stations being constructed without following regulations, for instance, close to each other.” said Kambala, “The regulations provide that filling stations should be a kilometre apart but we have seen this not being followed.”
On the other hand, Kambala addressed the problem of resident based filling stations, announcing that his ministry got reports of the malpractice. Meanwhile, there has been an influx of filling stations being built near residential areas and close to each other, while the stations are in operation.
