A notice by the Ministry of Labor dated 27th November, 2019, has announced that with effect from 1st January 2020, the Minimum Wage has been revised upwards from K962 per day to K 1,346.16 per day.
The above has been formalized through Government Gazette Notice No.68 headed EMPLOYMENT ACT (CAP. 55:01) (AMMENDMENT) ORDER 2019. The notice has urged Employers, Employees, and other interested persons should take note of this revision.
Recently, the Malawi Congress of Trade Union (MCTU) questioned the Ministry of Labour, Skills and Innovations, on why the new minimum wage will be implemented on January 2020 yet the wage was announced in July this year.
MCTU General Secretary, Dennis Kalekeni, revealed that a gazette by the Ministry shows that the effective date for the new minimum wage is 5 months late, considering that the 2019/20 fiscal year began in July
