The new Mining and Minerals Act contains amendments that will benefit local Malawians, according to the Acting Director of the Geological Survey in the Ministry of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining, Kondwani Dombola.
Dombola revealed the above at Phalombe during Mkango Resources Limited presentation of mining works that will begin in 2024. Dombola stated that the new Act urges mining companies to use and purchase local resources. “We also plan to have mining officers in district councils so that people should be able to access the Act in order to alleviate misunderstandings” said Dombola.
The new Act is to be printed and gazetted before public distribution and it has been hailed for addressing challenges that are faced by the mining sector. The prior Act was launched in 1981 and draft reviews begun in 2015.
