Finally the long announced and awaited hydropower plant at Mpatamanga at Shire River, will finally be implemented, as IFC InfraVentures has signed a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) with the Government of Malawi to sustain the project.
IFC InfraVentures is a US150 million global infrastructure project development fund that has been created as part of World Bank Group’s efforts to increase the pipeline of bankable projects in developing countries, designed to address the key constraints to private investment in infrastructure projects in frontier markets.
Starting with this project, the JDA was Signed for 258MW Mpatamanga Hydro Plant in Malawi. With plans of the project announced before, the Consumer Association of Malawi (Cama) said that the Mpatamanga project may not work, since since two hydropower stations (Nkula and Tedzani) on the same river are failing already. However, the Ministry of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining feel optimistic about the project, counting on the river’s current high water levels.
Upon completion, the new hydropower station will provide up to 258MW of clean energy for Malawi.
