The International Crop Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics (Icrisat) has released 3 new sorghum varieties after clearance by the Agricultural Technology Clearing Committee.
Icrisat Company Representative for Malawi, Patrick Okori, revealed that the new varieties will replace Pilira One and Pilira Two which are the current most used varieties in the country.
The new varieties known as Pilira Three, Pilira Four and Pilira five, were on a trial process funded by the Irish Aid, while the Malawi Seed Industry which aims to improve legume and cereal seeds systems.
Malawi has been recorded to produce sorghum but as of 2016, sorghum exports were to Zimbabwe only. The advanced varieties are bound to give the crop a chance to grow further in trade.
