In continuation of supporting households affected by Cyclone Idai in traditional authorities (T/As) Kadewere and Nkalo in Chiradzulu District, the Centre for Alternatives for Victimised Women and Children (Cavwoc) donated relief items worth K1.2 million to 150 families.
Speaking as items were being distributed to the households, Cavwoc programs manager Thokozani Chimasula said although the cyclone hit the area early this year, the effects are still being felt; hence, the donation to lessen the people’s suffering.
We work with women farmers; we have women forums and coalition of women farmers. We also involve T/As and other traditional leaders in the area to identify the beneficiaries,” she said. In his remarks, Senior Chief Kadewere thanked Cavwoc for the gesture. “Cavwoc has shown a human heart. This donation will ensure that the affected families start living normal lives.
Earlier this year, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) initially projected that Malawi’s economic growth in 2019 will be in at 5%, but has reviewed the projection to 4.9%, citing Cyclone Idai. According to Nico Asset Managers Monthly Economic Report for July 2019, Cyclone Idai impact is estimated to have resulted in production losses amounting to $9.96 million (about K7.3 billion), equivalent to 0.13% of gross domestic product (GDP).
