Walking a long distance or accessing a motorcycle when available, 20,000 residents of Masauli in Zomba, rely on Chilipa Health Centre, while an average of 50 expectant mothers occupy the centre’s maternity wing. To contribute towards quality maternal care at the health centre, Nissan Malawi traveled to the maternity wing to provide maternity packs.
Nissan Malawi’s Managing Director, Greg Hubbard, outlined that the donation was made to extend the reach of the company’s corperate social responsibility (CSR) to rural areas. “Our CSR is not just about city based initiatives; areas outside cities also need as much support, if not more” he said.
Together with Nissan Malawi’s Sales and Marketing Manager, Janeen Abobelera, Hubbard handed over the maternity packs to more than 80 new and expectant mothers; a pack consisted of a basin, rice, cooking oil, diapers, chitenje, and other needed commodities. St Luke’s Hospital Chief Hospital Administrator, Winasi Boma, was grateful for the donation, stating that the donation was not only beneficial for the mothers, but the recently born babies as well. “We are appreciate Nissan Malawi for this donation; it will help us achieve our organizations goal for better maternal care.” He also added that the centre needs better infrastructure and an ambulance, to effectively service distant patients.
Through its CSR, Nissan Malawi has contributed in health, education, relief and more. The 52 year old Chilipa Health Centre is headed by St Luke’s Hospital, serving patients around the Masauli areas.
