Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) public relations manager Innocent Chitosi announced that Escom has suspended night operations in the Northern Region following attacks on its workers on suspicion that they are bloodsuckers.
During a briefing in Mzuzu, Chitosi outlined that eight workers were attacked at Kasitu in Nkhotakota while working on a damaged structure on the sole transmission power-line supplying the Northern Region. The attack also follows vigilantes who mount roadblocks and search vehicles for suspected ‘bloodsuckers’.
The rumors, since 2003, have been that ‘vampires’ in some district break people’s houses at night to suck human blood. 17 years ago, analysts’ theory was that it is a political strategy to create a state of insecurity in the country.
