The Malawi Blood Transfusion Service has announced that following the pandemic outbreak of coronavirus disease (COVID-19), coupled with the state order to close schools.
The unfortunate development follows after the closed Schools, which are the main target for MBTS to collect blood, therefore the closure has seen most of mobile clinics cancelled. Moving forward, MBTS is relying on its static center which usually averages less than 10 units collection per day.
“We therefore extend our plea to the ordering Clinicians and doctors to limit transfusions to the ‘real life saving situations’” says the circular by MBTS, “Blood units will only be available on emergencies in the respective blood banks as issued by MBTS.”
